Why Sincerity may not be enough

Sincerity Accountability and Ownership

Do Sincere employees/ people have higher Ownership & Accountability?

Interestingly not necessary – there is no direct link between the two, they complement & contradict

Ownership and Accountability

What is Ownership – taking initiative and being responsible for the quality and timeliness of an agreed outcome, even when there are factors beyond you which impact the outcome! Taking ownership is making a definitive statement that trust me, I will not only deliver but will do so doing the right things. People with high ownership focus on the “HOW” – hence a direct connection with Accountability.
Being sincere does not always mean high ownership. The focus in sincerity shifts from “How” to “Who” and often we find very sincere people falling into the trap of blaming others and focusing only on being sincere regardless of the outcome, thereby compromising on agreed deliverables. This can result in conflicting situation because people with high sincerity focus on honestly and truly believe they deserve to be rewarded for that in spite of not delivering the output.

As consultants we have often seen this contradiction playing out in organisations especially in performance review discussions leading to bitterness & disappointment.
