Transformational Leadership: Over-Hyped Myth or Reality
Many of us have heard the phrase “transformational leadership”‘—ask people what they think it means, & sure enough, different people have different ideas, like taking bold & risky decisions in times of crisis, having the courage to make changes that impact the outcomes, having the ability to think on your feet, and so on.
While these are important aspects of leadership, the differentiator between leadership & transformational leadership is the leader’s leadership style. While most leaders deliver results through teams, in transformational leadership, the focus is more on team members with an intention of inspiring them to believe in their potential and develop themselves in a balanced & wholistic manner. This kind of leadership facilitates a two-way action where the leader & teams grow simultaneously & together.
Leadership is commonly perceived as an opportunity to be a power center, granting positional power to the leader. To make the shift from this mindset to inspiring others to grow requires a lot of self-assurance & confidence because it throws up the possibility and threat of someone else being better than the leader himself.
Some of the key qualities of transformational leaders are:
Self-Mastery: Heightened awareness of self.
Inspirational Attitudes: Empathy, gratitude, compassion, emotional connection, and being rooted in values.
Idealised Influence: Being a role model, possessing charisma, and maintaining high ethical standards.
Affect: High energy, enthusiasm, and optimism about individual and organizational vision.
Intellectual Stimulation: Staying at the top of the learning curve, taking risks, and leading innovation and change.
Historical and contemporary figures often cited as transformational leaders include Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and Oprah Winfrey. These leaders have made significant impacts by inspiring change, driving innovation, and fostering personal growth among their followers.
